What Is Mononucleosis?

What is mononucleosis?

Sometimes, parents think that the little ones in the house are protected against all diseases, but what we do not like to remember is that they are prone to contracting any type of infections. Mononucleosis is one of the diseases that affects babies the most… Let’s see how we can avoid it.

Kissing disease, as it is also known, is an infection commonly caused by the Epstein-Barr virus  (EBV). In general, it is common in people who were once exposed to it in their childhood.

However, not everyone who has been exposed to EBV has the symptoms that imply this problem, that is, they are only carriers.

The Epstein-Barr virus is the main cause of mononucleosis

However, there are other viruses responsible for mononucleosis, such as cytomegalovirus, which could cause a very similar disease . Generally, if an adult develops the signs of this condition, they will not feel it again for their entire life.

Mommy and Daddy, you are surely wondering how to ensure that your little one does not get these viruses. And, although we will give you a series of recommendations, the first thing we must do is understand the severity of this condition, since many prefer to joke about the kissing disease, without remembering that it has delicate consequences .

Learning to avoid mononucleosis

As usual, This disease is spread through kissing, hence the popular name given to it.

But not  it is the only means of contagion because, for example, the little ones love to share their snack or they like to try a delicious drink from their friends. With these simple acts of companionship the chances of contamination are raised.

Direct contact with someone else’s saliva is fatal to our children . In this sense, as parents we have to avoid giving them Kisses in the mouth  and teach them that it is not good to share those things that we have brought to our mouths. These two elements are essential to reduce the chances that angels will get mononucleosis.

Do not give your baby kisses on the mouth to keep him protected from diseases

So far there is no vaccine to combat the Epstein-Barr virus, but adults can contribute greatly to prevent it from contracting it , teaching them to take care of their eating implements and to respect that of other children.

On the other hand, it is essential that the youngsters have a good diet  and attend the pediatrician regularly, to ensure that they are healthy . A balanced diet will give you the nutrients you need to feel good and reduce your chances of falling into bed.

An effective treatment

High fever, constant fatigue, sore throat, loss of appetite, muscle aches, liver discomfort (the skin turns yellow), an enlarged spleen, swollen lymph glands in the neck, groin and armpits are some of the symptoms of this terrible disease. It affects children, adolescents and the elderly.

Fortunately, it is a benign condition that does not force victims to be isolated. Nevertheless, it is important to note that it is transmitted through coughing and sneezing , so you have to be careful with those who want to see how your baby is.

There are no vaccines or an effective treatment to combat this disease

The bad news is that there is no effective treatment to attack it . Maintaining complete rest, being in bed for two or three weeks, not doing sports activities or physical exercises will help you recover faster.

Fluid intake is also relevant so that you do not suffer from dehydration  and do not stop eating despite swallowing discomfort .

Can mononucleosis get complicated?

Faced with any of the signs that we mentioned above, it is recommended that you take your child to the emergency doctor . In this way, the difficulties that arise in these cases will be addressed.

The most serious concern that specialists usually have when faced with a patient with kissing disease is the excessive enlargement of the spleen , which is at risk of rupturing . Therefore, if you see that your little one feels strong pains on the left side of the body or has dizziness and difficulty breathing, do not hesitate to go to the hospital.

Undoubtedly, we must be attentive to the factors that influence the contagion of mononucleosis, but it is a task that we must do from home . With patience and love, they will understand why we have to take care of our health.
